First year impressions

Hi, I just finished first year of Wilfrid Laurier University and wanted to share some of my impressions.

Summer before first year

First of all, it was nice that they accepted me, as I had low school marks, about 75%. The university couldn't let me in for the programs I wanted (Economics and BBA), but they were nice enough to offer me into the Arts Program. They also gave me a grant of about 1500 dollars for my first year, which was awesome. So, I made sure I applied for OSAP and was eager to start the studies.

Fall term

In the beginning there was the orientation week, which I didn't go to, for whatever reason. So pretty much my first day at the university I went straight into my lecture room. I chose my courses rather late, and had to pretty much pick whatever was left for the 3 electives I had room for. I couldn't get favourable times, so I ended up with huge 5 hour breaks on Monday and Wednsday. However, those 5 hour breaks were a nice room for studying, which is way more productive at the university than at home. I noticed that nobody really cares if you pass or fail, and I saw many people who had troubles because they were used to someone pushing them to working hard. As exams rolled in, I found that I remembered well when doing all the practice questions some of the profs provide, they were really helpful. Exams were quite hard, depending on the course of course. Thankfully, I got a 10 GPA average in the fall term, which is pretty good

Winter term

In the winter term, I didn't buy half the textbooks because I learned that you can get away without textbooks for some courses. Winter term was worse, I took a financial math course which I didn't like. I kind of slacked off in the winter time and ended up with 8 GPA, which wasn't up to my standards. I also applied for a transfer to a business program which was approved in the summer.

Conclusion

WLU gives fantastic first year experience, and I've heard that it was easier than that of the other university in town, University of Waterloo. I definitely recommend going to WLU as it has a good business programs and most of the teachers speak good english (which is a big deal, trust me).

P.S. Thanks for reading, I know this is a rather boring all text hub, but its my first and Im just getting to know how the website works
