Free promotion
This page is on tips for promoting your business/website/yourself on the internet. A lot of people now days have a website/blog but have little cash left to promote it. I know far from all the methods, so please comment on which promotion methods worked for you.
1. Online classifieds
Simple and quite effective method of advertising. Classifieds are a nice way to promote your local business. Two websites seem to be most popular for this: Kijiji and Craigslist. I'm sure there are other sites, but we are going to focus on these two.
I had most of my experience with kijiji, who offer a nice free ad placement with the option of adding images. If you place it in the more popular categories, your ad will quickly loose its position on page #1, so its a good idea to update your ads every 3 days or so. Kijiji also offers some paid offer, like making your ad appear on the top for a week, for about $12, which is nice if you got some cash lying around.
Craigslist seem to be focusing on keeping a very simple interface, which is nice because it focuses the viewer's attention on the ad itself. Like mentioned above, I haven't had much experience with craigslist, I know that you need to confirm your registration by phone.
2. Social networking sites.
Social networking sites are a good way to promote your internet persona as well as your business/website. Some of the more known social networking websites are Facebook, Myspace and Twitter.
We will use facebook in this article to talk about this type of promotion. I would not suggest advertising your own business or website right in your profile information, except 1 link to the website. Instead of actively advertising in the profile (Which I think facebook prohibits, not sure), start a group with a relation to your business.
Example: If you wrote a fiction novel, make/join a group about fiction writing or a novel reading group. Then, as you get more visitors, add links to your website/amazon page where they can try your book out.
3. Writing/Blogging
Last but not least, writing interesting and creative articles on the web will create interest in yourself and your business affairs. Some of the websites that provide free article writing space are Hubpages, Blogspot and Squidoo. I have noticed that I get more news on Hubpages than on the other two, so I will recommend Hubpages to write your articles. Note: Article writing will mainly promote websites and online businesses, but not local businesses.
In order to use blogging as a promotional tool, you need to write articles related to your business, and put links to your website within your article.
Example: If you started a business selling home made candles online, you can write an article about the calming effects candles have or about the history of candles.
Conclusion.
I suggest you try all of these tips for your venture and see for yourself which ones brings you the most clients. I am still learning more tips so I try and add to this list later on. And remember, you need to have quality content BEFORE you start promoting, so work on developing good writing skills. Here's a guide to help you build better hubs
